Rashida's Quest: Have an adventure!
Suggestion: Pick an adventuresome friend. Tell him or her you want to try something neither of you has ever done before. It could be a foreign film festival, a hike you've never taken, or an ethnic food you've never tried. Then have your adventure together with an open mind and an optimistic outlook.
I am SO all over this! Most all of my closest friends are always game for adventure. That's what keeps life fun and exciting. One of my latest inspirations for keeping life fun, new, and juicy is Suzy Blu. I've mentioned her before, but she's worth mentioning again. For my last birthday, I wanted to do something I'd never done before, and the only thing I could think of, was to get my best-est friends together to have a wine tasting weekend in beautiful Santa Barbara, wearing pink hair, false eye lashes and of course bunny ears. Did we ever have fun!! I've never laughed so hard, so many days in a row, in all my life. "Adventure" is the best!
*Ahem* So...the angel featured on this Angel Quest card was illustrated by Diane I-Fan Chang. She's a fellow Art Center College of Design alumni. Our Temple City high school was lucky enough to have Diane teach the advanced art class a couple years ago, and they all came over for a studio visit one day. Angel Quest was lucky enough to have Diane illustrate six unique angel cards. They're all amazing, so you'll have to stay tuned here for more of her beautiful works.
Diane's Teaching Philosophy:
With a BFA in Ilustration from Art Center College of Design ('94) and a Single Subject Teacher's Credential from Point Loma Universiyt ('04), I believe by focusing on specific art disciplines as in Illustration, students will have more opportunity to explore and grow in both art appreciation and career development. Coming from a professional artist background with companies such as Disney, Dreamworks, Knowledge Adventure and Idealab, my main teaching goal is to bring real world relevancy into the curriculum with the objective of personal and career development in the arts, as well as addressing the interest of today’s adolescence and inspiring artistic creativity within technology. As a strong supporter for the California Framework and Standards for the Arts, I will implement the goals into my introductory classes to give students a broad base of knowledge from traditional to digital art production that they can then apply to more advanced classes. My advanced classes give students a chance to "put into practice" the concepts, ideas, skills, and theories they may have learned in previous classes with more cross-discipline and practical application toward career development. All classes will emphasize multiculturalism and support differentiated learning. To further enhance their skills in communication, I also focus my pedagogy on basic listening, reading, writing, and speaking. I strive to balance the presentation of knowledge with students’ active learning and on the development of problem solving skills. When we discuss and investigate topics in class, I think we move beyond a "merely verbal" understanding, because students start to see the implications a particular idea could have on the world’s culture and society, as well in their own lives.
Last weeks card, Angel of Good Luck suggested I hide a dollar wherever a child might find it. My first thought had been to tape it up high on a slippery slide. However, while I was at the park, the play area was so busy with little ones, that I couldn't really do it without being seen. So... plan B was to go into the library right next to the park and put the dollar inside a childrens book. I put it in the book that looked like one I'd want to read:
On my long trek back to the studio (50 yards), I decided that adults like to get lucky as well . . .
Because I'm only used to finding parking tickets slipped under my wipers, I thought it'd be fun to tuck a dollar under someone's windshield. It was fun!
